"Do you believe?" is such a loaded question anyway. Especially when it's followed up by "if you believe, then what do you believe?"
It's just not simple at all and people who act like it is are really kind of annoying.
Just think about the layers and levels of belief involved in believing.
There's the official canon- the stuff your religion has declared The Truth, the party line, the "facts" that everyone knows regardless of whether they're true or not, they form the basis of the faith.
There's the information scholars and theologians are not sharing with the general public.
There's what lots of people *actually* think.
There's what you hope is true. What you, in your most optimistic moments, want to believe.
There's what you fear might be true.
There's what you really believe no matter what you claim.
And there's what you tell *other* people you believe because you're afraid of how they'll react to the truth. |
